• Russian Studies (major and minor)

Russian is the first language of over 150 million ɬÀï·¬ worldwide. It is spoken in Russia, other countries in the former Soviet Union, and in many communities in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and North America. It is one of the five official languages of the United Nations. The U.S. government has classified Russian as a critical needs language vital to its national security interests.

Studying Russian language and culture through this program in SPU’s Department of Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics is an intellectually stimulating and enriching experience that can lead to an exciting career in travel, business, commerce, and governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Russian Studies (BA)

VIEW DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

• Russian Studies (BA)

• A minimum of 56 credits is required for this major, including 25 upper-division credits, 18 of which must be taught in Russian.
• You must complete all .    
• Plan carefully with your faculty advisor, because beginning and intermediate Russian courses are offered alternate years.
• A course in modern Russian literature and culture as well as independent-study options are also available.
• The Study Abroad requirement may be fulfilled through the programs.
• A Senior Paper is required and is to be presented in conjunction with the Capstone Seminar.
• Majors in Russian Studies are required to complete an Oral Proficiency Interview conducted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages prior to graduation.

Russian Studies minor

VIEW DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

• Russian Studies Minor

• A minimum of 35 credits are required for this minor, including 15 upper-division credits.
• 25 credits of Russian courses and 10 credits of history/global courses are required.

Apply to the major or minor

• To apply for a major or minor in Russian Studies, you must have a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA in all college work applicable to the BA degree and a minimum 2.5 GPA in 10 credits of coursework in the Languages, Cultures, and Linguistics Department.
