Lydia Green Nursing Program

The Lydia Green Nursing Program prepares graduates of competence, character, and wisdom to meet the health needs of a community by promoting wellness and providing illness care for its members.

Nursing (BS)

The aim of the baccalaureate degree program is to foster the development of your self understanding, caring, collaboration, ethical thought and action, intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and judgment 鈥 as well as integrating Christian faith with scientific knowledge and clinical expertise.

  • A minimum 125 credits are required for this major, including 80 upper-division credits.
  • You may complete all your coursework at SPU or you may transfer in your prerequisite, general education, and elective coursework from other institutions.
  • If you are a transfer student, you must complete a Direct Transfer Associate of Arts Degree or a Direct Transfer Pre-Nursing Degree (DTA) before your the transition to SPU.
  • As an SPU baccalaureate graduate, you will be prepared to assume entry-level practice and leadership roles in a variety of health care settings. 
  • Upon satisfactory completion of the baccalaureate degree, you are eligible to take the required for licensure as a registered nurse (NCLEX-RN).

VIEW DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Apply to the Nursing Major聽

If you are a currently enrolled SPU student, your preparation for entry into the Nursing major begins the first quarter of your freshman year. Upon completion of the first quarter of your freshman year, you can request a nursing faculty advisor through the .

  • Your application for admission to the major in Nursing must be received in the School of Health Sciences Lydia Green Nursing Program no later than January 15 of your sophomore year. 
  • are available by mid-October for program entry the following autumn.
  • To be considered for entry into the Nursing major, you must submit a Nursing Application, Recommendation Form, and official copies of all college transcripts of courses not taken at SPU, along with course descriptions to the School of Health Sciences, no later than January 15.
  • You must complete four prerequisite courses by the application due date; you must complete all prerequisite courses by Spring Quarter of your application year.
  • Acceptance is contingent on completion of the prerequisite courses* by the end of Spring Quarter of the year you are planning to begin nursing courses (for example, if you plan to start nursing course work in Autumn Quarter 2015, all prerequisites must be completed by the end of Spring Quarter 2015).
  • The preferred overall GPA in these prerequisite courses is 3.0 or above (2.75 minimum), with no course less than a 鈥淐鈥 grade (2.0). Attainment of the preferred GPA standards does not guarantee admission to the major, as the total number of admissions may be limited by capacity.
  • You must complete the major requirements in effect when you are admitted to the major.

Only complete applications will be reviewed. Select applicants will be notified if they are invited to attend a mandatory interview on campus. Applicants will be notified by mail regarding committee action. Further information about orientation to the Nursing Program will follow full acceptance into the program.

Transfer and Post-Baccalaureate Students

If you are a transfer or post-baccalaureate student, you must complete the following items. The forms must be received no later than January 15:

You must complete 90 transferable credits by June of your application year. Refer to the to see if courses will transfer to the equivalent SPU prerequisite course.

If you have no SPU credits, you must have a minimum 3.5 GPA in the combined prerequisites, with no course less than a 鈥淐鈥 grade, to be eligible for consideration.  

Note: The primary focus of the Equivalency Guide is the Puget Sound region. But if courses are not listed in the equivalency guide, it does not necessarily mean they are not equivalent. The transcript evaluation process begins in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and is finalized in .

Preference is given to students with a completed Direct Transfer Agreement associates degree (DTA). The SPU application is completed online; all other application materials must be mailed together and received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions no later than January 15. You are encouraged to apply early.

Mid-Program Transfer

You are a mid-program transfer student if you have completed nursing coursework at another school and now seek admission into SPU鈥檚 Nursing program at any time other than the Autumn Quarter of your junior year.
