Students in the Professional Studies program or in the Flex Program in Electrical Engineering follow an alternative curriculum. Students eligible for these programs are specifically identified as such at the time of admission to the University.
If you are completing the alternative curriculum, you must adhere to policies, complete requirements, and fulfill competency areas listed below under Graduation Requirements. This alternative curriculum replaces only the University Core courses and Exploratory Curriculum.
In addition to the graduation requirements outlined below, it is important for you to be aware of the standards related to completion of a major or minor, limitations on credit toward a degree, transfer policies, and (if you have previously completed a degree) information related to post-baccalaureate students.
Graduation Requirements
All students completing a first bachelor's degree at 涩里番 are governed by the following requirements and policies:
- A minimum 180 college-level, quarter credits.
- At least 60 credits earned in courses numbered 3000鈥4999.
- At least 45 college-level credits earned in residence as a matriculated student. (Credits earned by examination do not satisfy the residence requirement.)
- At least 25 of the final 45 credits for the degree must be earned from 涩里番.
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in all courses applicable to the degree.
- A cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in all courses taken at 涩里番.
- 鈥淧ass鈥 grades do not fulfill requirements in a major or minor, in the Exploratory Curriculum, in University Foundations, or in General Education.
- Satisfactory completion of an academic major. (Student in the Professional Studies Program complete a minor at SPU rather than a major.)
- If you enter SPU with freshman or sophomore standing, you are required to complete 8 credits in writing (鈥淲鈥) courses prior to graduation; if you enter as a junior, you are required to complete 5 credits; and if you enter SPU as a senior, you are required to complete 3 credits.
- All degree requirements for a major or minor are determined by the Undergraduate Catalog in effect when you are accepted to the major or minor. For example, if you are accepted to a major in Autumn Quarter 2017, you are subject to all major requirements listed in the 2017鈥18 Undergraduate Catalog. You are expected to apply to a major by the start of your junior year. (PDF) are available here and in the school or division office. Students will be contacted by Student Academic Services if they have not been accepted to a major, but have completed 105 or more credits.
- Policies and procedures related to application for graduation and degree posting:
- You must be accepted into a major prior to applying for graduation.
- You are responsible for applying for graduation. Apply through the Banner Information System by selecting Student Menu then Graduation Menu. For application deadlines, see the Graduation section of this catalog.
- If you are a transfer student with junior or senior status, you must apply for acceptance into a major after completing 15 SPU credits or as soon as you have met admission criteria for your major.
- You may change your application for graduation, but you should notify your undergraduate academic counselor of the change at least one quarter in advance of the previous intended quarter of graduation.
- Neither will your degree be posted to your academic transcript, nor will your diploma be ordered until all requirements are completed, including any outstanding I and N grades.
Writing Competency Requirements
If you are completing the Curriculum for Special Programs, you must fulfill areas of competency to receive a bachelor鈥檚 degree from 涩里番. All undergraduate students at 涩里番 Pacific must demonstrate English writing competency early in their career at SPU and as a condition of graduation. In addition, 鈥淲鈥 writing requirements must be met before a degree is awarded. You may fulfill these required competencies in a variety of ways.
Writing Competency
If you are entering SPU directly from high school, prior to your first quarter at SPU you will have a writing score assigned to you based on pre-college indicators. However, if you were awarded English composition credits for AP, CLEP, and IB exams, you are exempt from having a writing score assigned; you will also be exempt from receiving credit for a college composition course in which you earned at least a grade of C (2.0).
If you are an RN to BSN student, you are required to have taken and passed a college-level English (Composition) course with a C grade (2.0) or better to be considered for admission to the RN to BSN program.
If you are a transfer student, but and have not already taken and passed, with a grade of C (2.0) or better, a college-level composition course, you must take the English Placement Test. To do so, contact the English Department at 206-281-2036 to arrange testing. You will not be permitted to register for your second quarter at SPU until you have taken the English Placement Test.
- If your score indicates that you can write minimally at the college level but need a writing course in order to succeed in college, you will be required to take ENG 2201 鈥淚ntermediate College Writing.鈥
- If your score indicates that you do not yet write on the college level, you will be required to enroll in a designated section of ENG 2201 鈥淚ntermediate College Writing鈥 and work with a tutor in the Writing Lab.
You must complete all required coursework in writing by the end of your first four quarters at SPU.
Writing (鈥淲鈥) Courses
Courses designated as writing courses (usually 3000- and 4000-level) offer a substantial component of writing designed to reinforce your earlier work in writing. At the same time, those courses provide instruction in the technical and stylistic requirements of writing appropriate to a particular discipline.
In these courses, you are expected to write at least two papers and a minimum of 3,000 words, or about 12 pages, of final draft prose. Faculty members spend at least one class period providing instruction in writing, and they evaluate your written work for both content and form 鈥 not only for what is said, but also for how it is said. These courses normally also provide opportunities for revision as well.
Mathematics Placement
Appropriate placement in mathematics courses depends upon your intended major, as well as eligibility criteria. Eligibility can be demonstrated through an SAT or ACT math score, the Washington state General Math Placement Test (MPT-G), or transfer of a college course. Find out more about your Mathematics Placement requirements.
