Genetic Counseling

Students interested in applying to graduate programs in genetic counseling may choose to major in Cellular and Molecular Biology or Biochemistry. Other majors, such as Applied Human Biology, are suitable, provided that other pre-requisite courses are completed, such as Biochemistry, Genetics, and Organic Chemistry. Graduate programs may require supplemental courses such as Biostatistics, Communications, General Psychology, and Developmental Psychology. The requirements for admission vary by school, so it is essential for students to become familiar with the specific prerequisites of the graduate schools to which they intend to apply.

Most schools require a high score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students typically apply to graduate programs in December or January of their fourth year or later.
