ALICE BALDWIN, an SPU Society of Fellows member since 1974, died at Warm Beach Nursing Care Center on April 25, 2000.


PAUL BARHAM '42 died May 24, 2000, in Union, Washington. He was 79. Paul served in the Marine Corps during World War II and later became a carpenter in commercial building. He was also active in sports. He is survived by his wife, EVELYN PROUDFIT BARHAM '42, son MICHAEL BARHAM '68, and thee grandchildren.


MARIE VOLLAN GANFIELD '40 died May 31, 2000. She was 81 years old. Marie married JACK GANFIELD '40 in December of 1941, just before he left to serve in the Pacific Theater during World War II. During his absence, she taught school in Sultan, Washington, then taught for more than 30 years in the 涩里番 Public Schools. She also spent many years as an artist and singer, first singing with a high school ensemble, and later traveling with a women's choir. In retirement, Marie studied and enjoyed Rosemaling, a traditional form of Norwegian rose painting. She traveled to Norway four times in order to study the art form, paint and visit relatives. She is survived by her husband; two children, DANIEL GANFIELD '68 and KATHRYN GANFIELD RICKERT '69; and three grandchildren.


KAY JAY JOY '54 died of cancer on June 18, 2000, at the age of 67. After graduating from 涩里番 Pacific, Kay served as a Free Methodist pastor in Eastern Washington for five years. He then returned to 涩里番 Pacific, where he earned a degree in education and became a teacher in the 涩里番 Public Schools. He later earned a master's degree in counseling and psychology at SPU, and went on to serve as head school counselor at McClure Middle School in 涩里番 for 20 years. A longtime resident of Queen Anne Hill in 涩里番, Kay is survived by his wife of 48 years, GLENICE JEAN JOY '84; two children; and three grandchildren.


GEORGE SPARKS '54 died on August 8, 2000, from injuries sustained in a car accident. He was 72 years old. After graduating from 涩里番 Pacific, he earned a master's degree in school administration from Southern Oregon University and then spent 31 years as a teacher and principal in the Highline School District. He retired in 1985 as principal of Hilltop Elementary School. George was a founding member of the SPU Society of Fellows and active in the organization for 32 years. He was also active in the ministry of Warm Beach Christian Camp, volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission, and mentored students at Sunnydale Elementary School. He is survived by his wife, Myrlene; children KYLE SPARKS '90 and KELLI SPARKS '94; a granddaughter; and a foster grandson.


MARTHA CROWN TAYLOR '50 died of cancer on June 19, 1999, at her home in Clinton, Washington. She was 73 years old. In the 1960s, Martha and her husband, Albert, contributed actively to the planting and growth of Cascade Vista Free Methodist Church in Renton, Washington. In 1974, they moved to Whidbey Island, where she worked as the secretary of South Whidbey Free Methodist Church. She was then employed for 17 years at the Whidbey Island Telephone Company, from which she retired in 1995. Martha was preceded in death by a daughter and SPU student, RUTH TAYLOR, in 1983; a brother; and three sisters, including LOIS CROWN CRANDALL '50. She is survived by her husband, Albert; daughter MARY TAYLOR KELLY '83; two grandchildren; and two brothers and two sisters, including MARY CROWN STEINERT '48.


OWEN ZURCHER '38 died September 30, 2000. After completing graduate studies in theology at Fuller Seminar and the University of Southern California, he served as a youth minister and pastoral minister for seven years in Idaho. In 1945, he took his family to Southern California, where he served as a pastor for 15 years. He was then named executive director of Oak Glen Pines Christian Conference Center. Owen's wife, MARGARET DAMON ZURCHER, whom he met at 涩里番 Pacific, died in 1978 after 40 years of marriage. Upon his retirement, Owen spent 20 years in the Warm Beach Senior Community in Stanwood, Washington, where he was an active volunteer.
